Job Description

Job Description

FAMILY OFFICE CONTROLLER / DIRECTOR OF FINANCE

Hybrid - Dallas  | Multi-Entity Portfolio | Executive-Facing Role

WHY THIS ISN’T YOUR TYPICAL FAMILY OFFICE ROLE

This is not a traditional back-office accounting position.

This role sits at the intersection of finance, strategy, and leadership. You will work directly with the CEO and operate as the financial architect across a portfolio of companies. In addition to building the financial infrastructure, you will participate in executive discussions, help evaluate strategic decisions, and communicate financial insights to leadership and investors.

If you’re looking for a role where you simply close the books and produce reports, this is not it.

If you want to build systems, lead financial discussions, and influence business decisions, this is a rare opportunity.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

A successful entrepreneur and family office principal is seeking a Controller / Director of Finance to oversee and build the financial operations across a diverse portfolio of businesses and entities.

The portfolio currently includes:

• Established operating companies

• Real estate holdings

• A pre-revenue biotech venture

• Additional ventures and investments in development

This role requires someone who can both build the accounting infrastructure and operate comfortably in executive-level business discussions.

You will not only manage the numbers — you will help interpret them, present them, and guide strategic decisions.

As the portfolio expands, this role has a clear path to grow into senior financial leadership across the broader enterprise.

WHAT MAKES THIS ROLE DIFFERENT

Strategic, Executive-Facing Finance

You won’t operate in the background. This role requires someone who can lead financial discussions, challenge assumptions, and contribute to strategic conversations with leadership.

Build the Financial Infrastructure

Design the accounting systems, reporting frameworks, and internal controls across multiple entities.

Direct CEO Access

Work directly with the principal and leadership team with no layers of bureaucracy.

Investor Communication

Prepare and present financial insights to leadership and participate in discussions with investors and external stakeholders.

High Autonomy

Evaluate what exists, design what’s needed, and implement solutions.

Growth Path

As the portfolio expands, this role can evolve into senior finance leadership across multiple divisions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Leadership & Strategic Insight

• Lead financial discussions with leadership and translate financial results into business insights.

• Participate in strategic planning conversations and evaluate financial implications of new initiatives.

• Present financial performance to leadership and support investor-level discussions when needed.

• Facilitate financial discussions that connect financial data to business strategy.

Financial Operations & Reporting

• Own the general ledger, month-end and year-end close, financial statements, and reconciliations across all entities.

• Design and implement financial reporting frameworks across multiple entities.

• Manage budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning across the portfolio.

Systems & Infrastructure

• Evaluate and implement accounting systems and financial processes.

• Design scalable financial infrastructure to support a growing portfolio.

• Select and implement the appropriate financial technology stack.

Tax, Compliance & Risk Management

• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax requirements.

• Coordinate with external CPAs, tax advisors, and legal counsel.

• Identify proactive tax planning opportunities.

• Manage insurance, financial risk exposure, and business continuity planning.

Investment & Entity Management

• Track private investments and capital activity.

• Coordinate with banks, fund managers, attorneys, and financial advisors.

• Support formation of new entities and financial structuring for new ventures.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• CPA required

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (Master’s or MBA a plus)

• 7+ years of multi-entity accounting or finance experience

• Strong understanding of GAAP and multi-entity financial management

• Advanced Excel and financial modeling capabilities

• Experience coordinating with external auditors, CPAs, and advisors

• High integrity and ability to manage confidential financial information

IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

The ideal candidate is not just a technical accountant — they are a creative, business-minded finance leader who enjoys operating in entrepreneurial environments.

You likely have experience in:

• A family office

• Private equity or venture-backed company

• Entrepreneurial or founder-led business

• Early-stage or high-growth operating company

You are someone who:

• Is comfortable working directly with founders, investors, and senior executives

• Can lead meetings and confidently communicate financial insights

• Enjoys participating in strategic business discussions

• Can keep up with leaders who move quickly and generate big ideas

• Is creative in solving financial and operational problems

• Understands how to operate in startup or pre-revenue environments

• Can adapt to multiple personality types and communicate effectively with executives and operators

• Translates complex financial data into clear business implications and strategic recommendations

• Is comfortable presenting financial insights to leadership and investors

• Thrives in ambiguity and builds structure where none existed

• Wants to own the finance function rather than simply maintain one

FINAL NOTE

We are looking for a CPA who enjoys operating beyond traditional accounting — someone who can think like a business partner, engage in strategic conversations with leadership, and creatively solve financial challenges across evolving companies and early-stage ventures.

This role requires someone comfortable working with entrepreneurial leadership, navigating multiple personalities and big ideas, and translating financial insight into practical business decisions.
